Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) and Body Composition

Bioimpedance Analysis is a fast, accurate and safe way to measure key body composition elements. Through the study of the electrical properties of the body and their changes over time, we can easily measure your overall health and quickly chart your progress.

Information generated from your BIA includes fluid and cellular health markers used to guide therapy and monitor the effects of treatment. Bioimpedance Analysis is quick, painless, and completely non-invasive, using four electrodes placed on your wrists and ankles. No needles or blood work required.

Track Your Fluid, Cellular Health, and Body Composition with Bioelectric Impedance Analysis

Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) can be performed on any living thing: humans, animals, and even plants. Information generated from the bioimpedance analysis can be used clinically to determine fluid and cellular health markers as well as body composition. Body Composition is a measure of the distribution of the body’s three separate compartments; muscle, fat and fluid. BIA is far more accurate than skin calipers to measure body composition and is a much better determinant of healthy body weight than a scale.

Fluid and Cellular Health Markers

Fluid & Cellular Health Markers

  • Total Body Water (TBW)
  • Intracellular Water (ICW)
  • Capacitance – A measure of the integrity of your cells and how well they are holding an electrical charge.
  • Phase Angle – Indicator of OVERALL cellular health

One of the most valuable pieces of information gained by BIA testing is the assessment of fluid distribution in the body called the “fluid shift.” Proper hydration is more involved than just drinking plenty of water. In fact, it is quite possible to be holding 5, 10, 15, or even more liters of fluids and still be under-hydrated at a cellular level!

When we measure your BIA, you will learn about all the factors which determine how fluid is held intracellularly and how to influence those factors through daily lifestyle behaviors. You will learn how to increase the integrity of your cell membranes through your nutrition and lifestyle. We use the BIA measurements to track your progress as you begin your journey on The Path to better health and wellness.

Body Composition Markers

  • Body Cell Mass – % Muscle or metabolically active tissue
  • Fat Mass – Total Body Fat %
  • Extracellular Mass – % Bones, Ligaments, Cartilage, Fluids (everything other than fat)

Total scale weight is not as important as how the weight you carry is distributed between the 3 body compartments.

You should never begin a weight management program without a baseline measure of your body composition to know exactly what it is you are losing or gaining. You may be losing or gaining water, body fat, and/or muscle. BIA measurements are important to know which key components of body composition are changing and how much they are changing in either direction. Lack of effective monitoring is why many program failures occur resulting in long-term inability to maintain a healthy weight.

Assessment of body composition provides us with powerful information and accurate insight into a person’s state of health and degree of disease impact. Together with fluid and cellular health markers, BIA measurements can help determine if your plan of care is moving you in the right direction and what if any changes to your plan need to be made to alter the trajectory. As your health improves, it will be reflected in your cellular health markers and body composition. Losing weight in the right compartments is a natural side effect of gaining health

All patients will have a BIA and their results interpreted for them as part of the initial assessment as well as during follow up appointments. The BIA provides baseline health markers and a trackable measure of progress that can help guide proper adjustments to your diet and treatment plan!

Body composition assessment provides us with a powerful, accurate window into disease and health.

Additional BIA assessments and readings are offered as an independent service for those interested in body composition measurements and are not included in initial appointment or follow up appointment fees. Nutritional consults based on BIA measurements are also available as a separate service.

For additional Information on bioelectrical impedance and each of the elements measured, you can view our BIA handout that is provided in each patient welcome packet here.
