Myofascial Release (MFR) Therapy

Myofascial Release Therapy (MFR) is a safe and very effective hands-on physical therapy technique that involves the application of gentle sustained pressure into the muscles (“Myo”) and surrounding connective tissue known as the fascia (“Fascial”).

Using the dimension of time, the gentle pressure of MFR Therapy allows for the release of tight, hardened restrictions within the myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore motion. The most common patient benefits include improved to no pain levels, decreased stress and anxiety, better sleep, increased mobility, and improved sports performance.

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach™

We use the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach which is backed by extensive research and scientific evidence. It is the ultimate therapy for chronic pain and functional limitations consistent in producing results that last. Developed by John F. Barnes, an internationally recognized physical therapist, lecturer, author, and the world’s leading authority on MFR, this approach is considered revolutionary and has been successfully used to treat patients from all around the world.

The therapist uses a multitude of myofascial release techniques and movement therapies that recognize and treat the uniqueness of each individual. These techniques release areas of restriction in the connective tissue of the body known as “myofascial restrictions” or “soft tissue restrictions.”

Myofascial restrictions are similar to scar formation on the skin and are usually created through injury, trauma, inflammatory responses, repetitive movements, poor posture, surgical procedures, and patterns of unresolved stress (physical and emotional) within the fascial system.

Using a holistic approach to bridge your life’s emotional experiences with the physical challenges that often result, Myofascial Release Therapy can safely and gently release or soften hard, painful restrictions throughout the entire myofascial complex of the body for lasting and comprehensive results and authentic healing.

What is Fascia?

Fascia, or the fascial system, is what holds our entire body together from head to toe without interruption. It surrounds, supports, and penetrates every structure and organ in our body down to the cells with unparalleled strength. Thus, it plays an extremely important role in our ability to move and function without restriction. When fascial tissue becomes tight and restricted by hardened scar tissue from old injuries etc., it can produce intense pain from excessive pressure on sensitive body structures and nerves. It can also limit mobility.

Myofascial restrictions do not show up on standard tests such as x-rays, MRIs, CAT scans, myelograms, or others and they are overlooked by traditional musculoskeletal specialists and surgeons. Hardened fascia can also significantly limit mobility and range of motion.

It’s Time to Change the Paradigm

The conventional medicine approach to musculoskeletal and nerve pain is to use drugs that may relieve the pain temporarily, while traditional physical, occupational and massage therapy aims only to treat the symptoms of pain and pressure. They often recommend cookie cutter exercises without lasting results. Neither option offers a solution to address the restricted myofascial system which is the underlying cause of perpetuating symptoms. This is why so many people suffer long-term with only temporary bouts of relief but never seem to really get better with traditional therapy.

Treatment Sessions

Treatment includes one-on-one, hands-on sessions with a licensed, highly skilled and experienced MFR therapist who will provide you with a personalized exercise program and educate you on self-care techniques appropriate for your unique condition. Therapy encourages independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self-treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.

It’s important to note that exercise takes on a different meaning from conventional thought as it pertains to the health of the fascial system. Exercise doesn’t mean just working out at the gym or conforming to the one size fits all PT programs that are based simply on compound and single joint exercises.

Here, movement does not just pertain to the joints. There is movement in breath, digestion, laughter and posture, just to name a few. Therapeutic touch and our self-care techniques also create movement of the fascial system.

Each Myofascial Release treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams, tools or machinery. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia.

MFR is for those who wish to resolve their pain rather than manage their pain temporarily.

Dr. Krail-Javier’s personal MFR journey

What if I told you that everything you have ever heard about musculoskeletal health and disease was false – like, “your pain is just a natural part of getting older.” That’s simply not true!

What if your definition of strength is inconsistent with what it really means to truly be strong?

What if you replaced the word “heal” with the word “scar” after an injury? And what If that physical injury also holds emotional turmoil. Are you cross-eyed yet? I understand, because that was me! So, just sit with that a while.

I have been a lifelong athlete, Figure and CrossFit competitor, and dedicated fitness enthusiast whose life has centered around physical activity and competition.

I have, as many say, “been there, done that.” As a result, I have endured serious injury and unrelenting pain. But with MFR I was able to recover and turn my life around. This experience has blessed me with tremendous knowledge and the connections to help free others of their pain and suffering.

I once believed I would never again be able to do the things I love most in life which all involve being physically active. My pain was so severe I had daily panic attacks. I wanted my life to end and for a while did not consider myself to even be living, but rather existing.

Luckily, I met an amazing MFR therapist using the John F. Barnes Myofascial Release Approach. Ulrika Naresh, PT, is a physical therapist who not only saved my life with her God-given hands and mind blowing wisdom, but she also changed my life for the better indefinitely. I no longer view strength as the ability to lift heavy weights or squat over 200 pounds, but rather the ability to maintain full body function and range of motion, that allows me to move freely and enjoy every aspect of life through pain free mobility in everything I do.

I now enjoy running, jumping and lunging up and down the New Orleans Levee, biking, roller skating, hula hooping, playing volley ball, climbing stairs, playing and running with my beautiful pitty – Ozzy, jumping on the sofa or anything that bounces (who needs a trampoline), and all sorts of other weird jiggly movements that keep me flexible “strong” and agile. I also really enjoy cleaning my house and bending over to shave my legs  … because I can! I have had and continue to have the privilege of working with Dr. Dawne Nance PT, DPT and Dr. Cheryl Jeane PT, DPT who are also amazing therapists with their own unique styles and God given hands. Each of these amazing ladies have played a significant role in my recovery.

Does this sound familiar?

Whether you consistently pursue core hobbies or seek new experiences, you likely do so because you love being active and free to move without restriction. But lately, or maybe even for a while now, you feel trapped in your own body, constrained by pain and immobility that keeps you from doing the things you love.

You are indeed getting older, we all are, and many well-meaning people, maybe even your doctor, tell you that what you are experiencing is a “normal” part of life and aging. But don’t subscribe to that. There is a way to keep, and even better your active lifestyle.

We can’t stop you from aging (although we wish 😉 we could)  BUT you don’t ever have to feel old!!
