Integrative and Functional Medicine

Integrative and Functional Medicine
Integrative Medicine is a healing-oriented approach to patient care that recognizes all of the potential physical and non-physical influences on one’s health. It treats the whole person in connection with their environment using the best combination of all appropriate therapies and professional disciplines to treat the underlying cause of disease and achieve optimal health.
Functional Medicine is based on natural health principles and provides a systems-based platform for delivering personalized precision medicine focused on physiologic function rather than the pathology of disease.

Deep Rooted In Natural Medicine
Integrative medicine is sometimes referred to as functional medicine. Deep rooted in the principles of naturopathic medicine and philosophy of holism, together they offer a new medical paradigm to accommodate the failures of today’s deeply flawed medical system. We believe the growing popularity of modern day integrative and functional medicine represents a rebirth of the lost ancestral practices that were once our only form of medicine and used long before modern pharmaceutical based, symptoms-oriented medicine ever existed.
Integrative medicine includes practices that have been used for thousands of years across various cultures such as traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, heat and light therapy, osteopathic medicine, therapeutic touch, yoga, prayer and meditation, and mind-body techniques. However, it does not exclude conventional medical therapies when appropriate and cleverly combines all health and wellness practices that best serve each individual based on their unique needs and condition.
Integrative medicine provides care to patients that combines the best of modern science and technology with the ancient wisdom that has informed medicine for centuries. It was born out of the need to effectively treat complex chronic illness, but anyone could benefit greatly from this approach to health and wellness.
Why it works
Integrative medicine values prevention, is informed by evidence, works toward disease resolution, and emphasizes a strong therapeutic relationship between the patient and practitioner. Identifying the root cause of disease while preventing its progression or future occurrence requires a focus on physiologic function rather than the pathology of disease.
Integrative and functional medicine practitioners understand that function (the way your body works) is a dynamic process determined by the complex interaction between one’s genetics and their environment, diet, and lifestyle and that alteration in function, or dysfunction happens long before a pathologic state develops, or manifestations of disease occurs.
What this means for you is that we do not just lump you into a disease or syndrome category. It means that you can change the trajectory of your health at any time by making the appropriate changes to your environment, diet, and lifestyle that bring your unique biochemistry back into balance with your genome to prevent the expression of disease. By detecting early changes in function, we allow for successful intervention with personalized therapeutics that have low-to-no associated risk, unlike therapies required to treat more advanced stages of disease.

The Integrative Process
Integrative medicine promotes a therapeutic partnership between the patient and practitioner and stresses the importance of mutual decision making. It requires substantial time spent with each patient and efforts to uncover and investigate all the critical points of the patient’s full story. The Integrative process differs greatly from the conventional medicine experience.
You can expect to invest a lot of time upfront sharing a detailed account of your personal, social, and family health history, circumstances around and leading up to your current condition, as well as your medical experiences and future goals. Initial appointments can last 2-3 hours. Careful and extensive history taking, physical examination and laboratory testing are necessary to acquire a deep understanding of all the biochemical, genetic, and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to the problem.
Oftentimes, multiple factors are responsible for your illness or symptoms, it is seldom a single cause and effect situation. Achieving resolution and optimal wellness requires all influencing factors on your state of health be exposed and addressed. This process is what enables long awaited answers to questions surrounding the often perplexing health issues and symptoms with which you may have been struggling for years.
After your initial consultation, all the pieces to your story are laid out, investigated, and evaluated. You will work together with Dr. Krail-Javier, DNP to decide the health strategies that will work best for you. We will then move forward with your integrative plan of care focused on your specific needs. This process is what enables long awaited answers to often perplexing health issues and symptoms with which you may have been struggling with for years.
It is important to note that this is not a “one and done” experience. Extensive follow up is usually necessary to monitor your progress, adjust your plan accordingly, and ensure your long-term success with the program. Depending on your condition and goals, you may require several follow up appointments. Follow-up appointments are expected to decrease in frequency as you continue to show progress and achieve your goals.
We encourage you to embrace your journey on The Path to health and wellness, and strive to make it a positive, enlightening and life changing experience!!
